Children cheat at school: why and how to deal with it
Lies and theft have become commonplace among schoolchildren, especially adolescents. But such behavior is unacceptable, it is necessary to fight it in order to prevent serious consequences.
In some children, this behavior indicates serious psychological problems, but in most cases these are ordinary incorrect behavioral patterns that can be corrected. Such habits are more common in boys than in girls, and are most common at the age of 5–8 years. If you catch a child in a lie or theft, it is important to consider his age and stage of development.
Children under the age of 3 years never intentionally lie and steal – they can experiment with words and entertaining facts that they see around. By the age of 6–7 years, the child begins to understand that lying and stealing is wrong from a moral point of view. Consider several ways to correct this behavior of the child.
Set a good example
It is very important. You are not perfect, therefore you cannot expect your children to be perfect. At the age of 5 years, children already notice every detail in the behavior of their parents. Do you always act honestly? Pay attention to the moral standards that you teach your children. If your words correspond to actions, moralizing is no longer needed.
Do not look at the child’s habits through your fingers
When the child begins to cheat, you will definitely hear complaints from teachers, school leaders and other children. The bad habits of the child can not be hidden for a long time. Do not look at them through your fingers or pretend that nothing happened. Talk to your child. Do not use violence or rudeness towards him – this will only worsen the situation. Be patient and just ask the child why he did this. Listen to him and explain why this behavior is bad.
Explain the rules of life to your child.
Make sure that you do not cause excessive stress in the child, otherwise it will make him even more impulsive and prone to deception. The society imposes an atmosphere of competition on the child, but parents must explain to him that victory is not the main thing. In life, you must be honest and hardworking. Efforts and sincerity will always be rewarded.
Reduce your expectations
The child becomes prone to lies when parents set him too high expectations. Comparisons, rivalry and competition with classmates contribute to this. When a child understands that honesty is more important than victory at all costs, he will get rid of bad habits and will try to become better.
Develop good baby habits
The best way to rid your child of bad habits is to distract him. The child may be too small to understand logical or abstract reasoning and moralizing. In this case, it is necessary to turn his attention to constructive activities: collecting stamps, growing indoor plants, various types of creativity. All this will make the child feel good, find new hobbies and acquire new skills. This can relieve him of the habit of lying.
There are many situations that encourage a child to lie or steal. If the above methods do not help correct his behavior, you should consult a psychologist.
